Who Am I? Owning Our Education
Controlling Our Narrative
Come join us in community. Who Am I? Owning our Education Controlling Our Narrative is a 10-week summer experience course for teens on Saturdays in partnership with The Shabazz Center. We will educate, uplift and engage teens in meaningful dialogue and reflection on the challenges, strengths and complexities of African American identity development. Come prepared to learn, laugh and gain new friends.
Schedule*:
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dates: Saturdays, June 15 to August 24 (except July 6)
Location: The Shabazz Center, 3940 Broadway, New York NY 10032
Who Should Attend:
Teens in grades 9-12 (2024-2025 school year) who want to have unique experiences of cultural pride, and gain a more accurate narrative about Black ancestral history and contributions from pre-slavery to the present day.
Teens ages 13-17 interested in engaging in meaningful dialogue and reflection on the challenges, strengths and complexities of African American identity development.
Teens passionate about community, social justice, leadership and exploring issues affecting the Black Diaspora.

Shazel Muhammad is a TEDx presenter, international keynote, dual citizen of the Republic of Sierra Leone, and founder of African Link Initiative (A.L.I.), an evidence-based identity development initiative transforming how youth of African descent see their world and their possibilities by first transforming how they see themselves (past, present & future) and the continent of Africa. A.L.I. has three-parts and culminates in a birthright trip to Ghana.
